Trash Pickup
Trash cans can be placed at the end of your driveway if you live on Shingle Springs Drive, Tennessee Drive, Neef Lane or Elen Court. The neighborhood has several generic pickup locations if you do not live on one of these streets. You must contract for trash service with Waste Management and they will assist you in identifying the correct pickup site. Current monthly charges (as of February 2004) are as follows:
| 1 can | 2 cans | |
| 32 gallon cans | $14.83 | $23.32 |
| 45 gallon cans | $17.48 | $27.48 |
Note that you must label your street address on your trash cans. You may also want to paint your name on the lids, but that is not required. Please place only trash cans and recycling bags at the pickup locations. You can contact Waste Management about trash pickup services at 530-626-4141.
Note that trash pickup is postponed one day only if a pickup falls on one of the following holidays:
If you have a large amount of trash, you may take it directly to the Waste Management facility in Placerville (same address as given below for hazardous wastes), or you may take it to the Sacramento County (Kiefer) landfill located at 12701 Kiefer Boulevard and Grant Line Road. The rates at the Kiefer landfill are considerably less than the rates at the Waste Management facility in Placerville. The Sacramento landfill is located about 30 miles from Shingle Springs. Just exit Highway 50 at Scott Rd, head south to White Rock, follow that West for a mile or two, where it becomes Grant Line Road going south. Continue on Grant Line Road for a few miles and turn left at Kiefer Blvd. The landfill is on your left – you can’t miss it. The cost for a fully loaded pickup truck is approx $15.
You can visit the Kiefer Landfill website for more info, including details on acceptable materials and rates.
You can drop off household hazardous wastes at the Waste Management facility in Placerville. They accept hazardous wastes on Friday’s and Saturday’s from 9AM to 4PM. Waste Management is located at 4100 Throwita Way in Placerville just south of Placerville along Highway 49. They can be reached at 530-626-4141. Or you can visit El Dorado County’s Hazardous Waste website for more info.
El Dorado County allows homeowners to burn timber and brush that was cut from their own property. Burn permits are required and can be obtained from the local fire department (there is one on Ponderosa Blvd just North of Hwy 50). You must verify that burning is permitted that day by calling the Burn Day Information line at 530-621-5897 just before you start your burn. Burning is usually allowed from October through April, depending on air quality and the fire danger.
Note that it is illegal to burn anything other than material grown on your own property. This includes even papers and dimensioned lumber. The toxics produced by burning these materials contribute to air pollution and can be hazardous if inhaled.
Whenever you do burn, please take care never to burn any poison oak, which is common to this area. Breathing even a small amount of smoke containing the oils from poison oak can cause life-threatening damage to your lungs.
